Two models, and picking the wrong one is the usual disappointment
The small model is a portrait matting network. It is 26 MB, it is quick, and it is superb on people. It is also trained on people only: hand it a photograph of a butterfly and it will find nothing at all, because as far as it is concerned there is nothing in the picture.
The general model is 176 MB and finds whatever the salient subject is: a product, an animal, a piece of furniture. Use it for anything that is not a person. If a cut-out comes back empty or nearly empty, you almost certainly have the wrong one selected.
What good and bad look like
Edges are where these models earn their keep. A clean silhouette against a contrasting background comes out excellent. Fine hair, fur and motion blur are the hard cases, and you should expect a soft or slightly chewed edge there rather than a perfect one. Glass, smoke and anything semi-transparent will be treated as either wholly in or wholly out.
Transparency and file size
A transparent cut-out has to be a PNG or a WebP, because JPEG has no alpha channel at all. If you pick a solid colour instead, any format will do.
Be ready for the file to grow. A 12-megapixel photo saved as a transparent PNG can come out several times larger than the JPEG you started with, because PNG is lossless and JPEG is not. If it is going on a web page, resize it first, or save it as WebP.
Why in the browser
The obvious uses are product shots, portraits, listing photos and headshots, which are exactly the images people are least comfortable posting to a free web service that keeps a copy and rate-limits them into a subscription. Here the model is downloaded to you and the picture never moves.
Common questions
The cut-out came back empty.
You are almost certainly using the person model on a photo with no person in it. Switch to the general model and run it again.
Part of the subject is missing.
Try the other model, since they disagree about what the subject is. Low contrast between subject and background is the usual cause, and no amount of setting-fiddling fixes a subject the model cannot see.
The transparent areas look white or black.
That is your image viewer, not the file. Many viewers paint transparency as a flat colour. Open it in a browser or drop it onto a coloured background to check.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the original?
PNG is lossless and carries a fourth channel for transparency, while the JPEG you started with threw detail away to get small. Save as WebP, or resize before cutting out.
Can it do a batch?
One image per run. The model stays loaded between runs, so the second and later images only cost the processing time.
